The following steps are required to bring cats and dogs into Australia. For detailed information, please click here.
- GENERAL ELIGIBILITY
- IMPLANT A MICROCHIP IN YOUR CAT OR DOG
- APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO IMPORT Time frame: at least 2 months prior to export
- PERMIT TO IMPORT
- COMMENCE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
- FIND A “REGISTERED” VETERINARIAN, AN “OFFICIAL (GOVERNMENT) VETERINARIAN” AND A “ GOVERNMENT APPROVED LABORATORY”. Time frame: As soon as possible.
- GENERAL VACCINATIONS
- DOGS ONLY: BRUCELLOSIS, EHRLICHIOSIS
- DOGS ONLY: EXTERNAL PARASITES
- DOGS ONLY: LEPTOSPIROSIS
- BOOK A PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION
- INTERNAL PARASITE TREATMENT
- DOGS THAT HAVE LIVED IN AFRICA ONLY BABEOSIS
- CATS ONLY: EXTERNAL PARASITE TREATMENT
- FLEA BATH FOR DOGS
- COMPLETE VETERINARY CERTIFICATE A, INCLUDING PRE-EXPORT INSPECTION
- COMPLETE VETERINARY CERTIFICATE B, SEALING ANIMAL IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER
- CHECK PET IN WITH THE AIRLINE.
REQUIRED PROCEDURE
In order to bring in a dog/cat, it must be brought in by a manifested air cargo and is not allowed to be personally carried in.
- Get an import permit
- Within 30 days prior to the departure date, a blood sample must be sent to the CENTRAIR
quarantine laboratory. (For dogs only. This is not required for cats.) - An external parasite treatment must be done on the same date as the blood sampling (for dog only).
- Other vaccinations against distemper, infectuous hepatitis, canine parvovirus, parainfluenza must be done between 14 days and 12 months prior to departure (the date counting should include the departure date) for dogs
- Other vaccination against feline enteritis, feline rhinotracheitis, and feline calicivirus must be done between 14 days and 12 months prior to departure (date counting should include the departure date) for cats
- A second external parasite treatment must be done within 4 days prior to the departure date for dogs.
(For cats, only one external parasite treatmet is required, and two times is not necessary.) - An internal parasite treatment must be done within 4 days prior to the departure date (for dogs and cats).
Although rabies vaccination is not always mandatory, the Australian quarantine facility requires it, and therefore, we recommend the rabies vaccination be done while in Japan.
